A Country Worth Fighting For

By Yin, Letters from Ward 5, Tanjong Rambutan

Behind the doom and gloom is a country worth fighting for.

Despite all that is wrong, this country is still a good country. Malaysians are good people, if you have engaged daily at the grassroots level with ordinary Malaysians from all ethnicities and background you will agree with me. The White Flag movement at the height of the pandemic is proof enough – we help our fellow Malaysians in need whatever their race or creed.

The racism, corruption and religious extremism are the work of a few who divide us so that they can rule and enrich themselves and their families. These are the growing pains of a multi-cultural nation on the way to maturity. But it does not mean we have to put up with it longer than we have to.

November 19th we can end it. It’s up to us.

There is no silver bullet to our problems.

However, the choice is clear.

One side stands for ethnic division with one race enjoying all the benefits denied of the others. One side pursues an Islamic State Agenda with Shariah as the paramount law of the land. One side is on record as having the most corrupt prime minister. The others awaiting trial are fighting for their political survival. Their hope is to win power so that they can subvert justice.

On that side are: UMNO-BN, Perikatan National, Pejuang, PAS.

The other side advocates inclusivity and affirmative action based on needs and not race. They promise zero tolerance on graft and corruption. They promise to work towards Bangsa Malaysia – to unite the country and its people. They promise to deliver a prosperous and fair Malaysia.

On this side is Pakatan Harapan, Warisan, Gerak Independent, Parti Socialis Malaysia.

But let’s not be naïve, they have no silver bullet. Their leaders are no angels. They have their quota of unsavoury characters, opportunists and charlatans.

So, GE15 is a choice of the lesser of two evils.

It’s a choice between giving ourselves a chance to heal the rift between the races started by Mahathir and continued by those who came after. To right the damage done by the decades of misrule and corruption.

Or to continue down the slippery slope to dystopia UMNO-BN has taken us.

Between bad and badder, it is wise to kill the big snake first and deal with the small snake later.

Vote Wisely.
