Is PAS releasing water into Sungai Muda?

By P Ramakrishnan

What right has the Kedah MB to demand payment for the water that flows into Sungei Muda? Does he realise that the source of the water is in the hills and mountains of Thailand?

It is flabbergasting that this crazy thing could happen but the PAS Kedah Menteri Besar (MB) is demanding RM50 million from the Penang state government for drawing water from Sungai Muda. This does not make sense, simply because it is a demand without rhyme or reason.

It is common knowledge that Sungai Muda flows from Kedah and meanders its way through Penang state on its way to the sea. This is the natural course for Sungai Muda before it empties itself into the Straits of Malacca.

The way the MB is fighting for the RM50 million for the river water gives the impression that the water in Sungai Muda is generated by PAS and released into the river. If PAS had miraculously produced the water before releasing it into Sungai Muda, a cost would have incurred in the production of the water – in which case Kedah is entitled to receive payment for the water. But is this the case? It’s not Kedah’s water and he has no right to demand for payment.

Is the MB that dumb not to realise that the source of the water is not from Kedah but from the mountains in Thailand? It is from these Thai mountains that the water gushes down and travels through Kedah and Penang before it reaches the Straits of Malacca.

Going by the MB’s silly reasoning, can Thailand actually lay claim to the water that passes through Kedah? But Thailand won’t. It knows it has no hand in the water that feeds the river.

By his convoluted logic, the MB should voluntarily consider paying Thailand for using the water that originates from Thailand. With all respect, will he be that puerile and fatuous?

The MB doesn’t seem tohave the capacity to understand the nature of things in the universe and is unable to appreciate that water is a gift from God – and it comes free! It is the nature of things that we are blessed with rain that provides for our needs: to quench our thirst, to irrigate our farms and fields, to clean our plates and cutlery, to bathe, to provide for our household needs, etc.

Water does not belong to any state, political party or a particular politician to tag a price to it. It’s only the foolish who will try to do this absurd thing and expose themselves as lacking in commonsense.

It is rather strange that PAS, the Islamic party, has kept quiet on this controversial issue without pointing out that the MB’s claim is seriously and severely flawed and that the more he insists on this payment the sillier he appears to be.

What has Hadi Awang, the PAS president, to say on this controversy? Will his views reflect some commonsense? It will only be known when Hadi opens his mouth! It appears that he will not dare to take the risk!

If Pas wants to be parochial, then it will be stuck forever in the medieval times of ignorance and forfeits its right to be sensible and rationale!

What will the MB come up with next? Will he collect toll from Penangites crossing into Kedah? If this happens, there will be no end to this absurdity!

If he wants to be so calculating, then he shouldn’t be accepting the federal allocations given to Kedah. That money does not solely belong to Kedah but comes from taxes collected from citizens all over Malaysia. Penang contributes the second highest taxes to the federal government. How come the MB has no shame in accepting the federal allocation, some of which must surely come from Penang?

The MB of Kedah may not be in that position after GE 15 but Sungai Muda will continue to exist as the sun will continue to rise.

I’m tempted to tweak Tennyson’s poem, The Brook:

For PAS may come and PAS may go

But Sungai Muda will go on forever!

The Kedah MB’s conduct reminds us of the saying, “Common sense is the most limited of all natural resources.”

Will it ever dawn upon him that in the words of the author, Amit Kalantri, “a river doesn’t just carry water, it carries life.”

We Malaysians must continue to aim for the lofty and celebrate life, not denigrate it!

“The Malay body polity must wake up”

If the others are awake, there’s nothing stopping them from extending a hand, help wake up “the Malay body polity” and whatever Malay and Muslim there are.

A patronising half-baked crusade and a condescending revelation ain’t going to save those who still have to wake up.

If the Malays are “so dumb founded… struck mute… they acquiesce of the unsavoury activities of their holy men”, then it calls for more than part-time “alternative” wise lecturers or holy men or saviours to lift them out of their sorry state.

Only by rolling up the sleeves and actively riding the waves with them are gonna help those whom some of us have appointed themselves to save, pep talk don’t get no rice cooked, Amen.

    “releasing water” may mean pissing.

Yes, Pas does piss about with every and all it doesn’t have intelligence or wit to handle.

And get all pissed up with wallowing and drowning in power, and inside Satan-designed luxury cars.

Always a problem if you get delusional holy men pissing about practising religion, and lording it over others – and masturbating with the thought of power…

PUS is not fit to govern. They don’t understand what is good governance, but the worst about them is that they don’t use their akal. Reciting the holy koran from memory doe not make you a great man/woman nor does it make you a better muslim. The mass media is full of the dysfunctional and criminal activities of holy people, preying on the charges under their care. But why is the malay body polity so quiet about the whole episodes. Are they so dumb founded that they are struck mute or do they acquiesce of the unsavoury activities of their holy men. The Malay body polity must wake up and move with the rest of the world, dysfunction and crime to be left behind.

    Good article.
It points out exactly what this country needs in its politicians, common sense and logic!!!
Alas, these attributes are extremely rare in Malaysian politics/politicians!!!
So, how can this country ever be great again???

“So, how can this country ever be great again???”

      This country was never great.

Only deluded M for Moron M for Mahathir thinks this country was one of the Asian “tigers”!

If you have visited more than just a few countries, most people don’t know where tf Malaysia is when they know where Singapore is. Many think Malaysia is somewhere inside China. Some think it is in the Caribbean.

The Yanks and some Europeans think it is just another “sh*th*le” country. Many of my unsympathetic angmoh friends quite agree when they were enlightened about how Malaysians use toilets…
